As of 1 January 2024, co-financing of the costs of burial of HVO members was enabled

Right to the costs of burial of HVO members

The Ministry of Croatian Veterans shall bear the costs of transport and burial of the remains of a deceased war disabled member of the Croatian Military Academy and a deceased member of the Croatian Military Academy, who at the time of death had Croatian citizenship and residence in the Republic of Croatia.

Transport and burial costs

In the event of the burial of the remains of a deceased military disabled member of the Croatian Military Academy and a deceased member of the Croatian Military Academy, the following costs shall be recognised:

a) funeral and/or cremation equipment: wooden coffin, basic urn, decorative urn, grave sign (cross or other), textile furniture, tin cartridge, plastic bag with cap, small sign for coffin (cross or other), letters and numbers for coffin, text plate and cover (up to EUR 300,00 VAT),
B) burial and/or cremation and/or dispatching costs: services for the use of morgues, cooling chambers, loudspeakers, crematoriums, bells, grave excavations, earth removal, removal of cover plates, return of cover plates, manipulation of remains, use of trolleys, jointing of grave openings, placing of urns and the like (up to EUR 200,00 with VAT),
C) Transport of the deceased from the place of death to the place of burial within the Republic of Croatia: acquisition of the deceased, lump sum or local transport if prescribed and/or transport outside the territory of the city (up to 0,95 €/kmVAT),
D) transport of deceased persons outside the Republic of Croatia (up to €0.95/km and up to €730.00 with VAT),
F) a burial site with a concreted frame in the territory of the Republic of Croatia.

Submission of applications

The request for the burial of a deceased HVO member shall be submitted to the competent administrative department in the county or the City Office for Social Protection, Health, Veterans and persons with disabilities of the City of Zagreb, according to the place of residence of the deceased. The application may be submitted by a family member of the deceased or other natural or legal person with the following documentation:
  • certificate of fact of death (certificate of death, death certificate, extract from the death certificate, discharge letter, permit for burial),
  • certificate of membership of the Croatian Military Academy, not older than 6 months,
  • certificate of permanent residence in the Republic of Croatia at the time of death (issued by the Ministry of Interior),
  • certificate of citizenship in the Republic of Croatia (native, extract from the Register of citizens - issued by the Registry Office).
If the family members of the deceased or another natural person pay the costs of the burial, they may submit a request for reimbursement of the costs of the burial within one year from the date of burial, accompanied by the aforementioned and the following documents:
  • the original account,
  • a copy of the applicant's current/secure account,
  • a copy of the applicant's identity card,
  • completed and signed application form for the burial of HVO members,
  • death certificate (after entering death data in the queen),
  • a copy of the identity card/passport of the deceased member of the Croatian Military Academy.
