Treatment abroad

The right to reimbursement of part of the costs for the person accompanying a Croatian Homeland War veteran during treatment abroad

If the Croatian Health Insurance Institute (HZZO) has approved your treatment abroad, as a Croatian Homeland War veteran you are entitled to reimbursement of part of the costs of the person accompanying you during treatment, if the HZZO fails to approve another person accompanying you.
 
If the person accompanying you uses paid leave, their employer is entitled to compensation for the salary paid to the person accompanying you during the time they spent abroad, including the time spent on travel.
 
The approved treatment must be directly related to wounds, injuries, illnesses, aggravation of the illness or the occurrence of the illness that are a direct consequence of participating in the defence of the sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia.
 

How to exercise the right and required documentation

You should send the following to the address of the Ministry of Croatian Veterans (Trg Nevenke Topalušić 1, 10 000 Zagreb):
  • the filled out application for reimbursement of part of the costs of the person accompanying you (Form 6)
  • a copy of the final decision of the Croatian Health Insurance Fund on the approval of treatment abroad
  • a copy of the enforceable decision establishing that the illness, wounding or injury is a direct consequence of participation in the Homeland War
  • a copy of the final decision on the recognition of the disabled Croatian Homeland War veteran status and a copy of the last finding of the competent second-instance medical committee (if you are a disabled veteran)
  • the original ticket for the transport of the person accompanying you, which refers to the same means of transport used by the beneficiary after the approval of the Croatian Health Insurance Fund
  • a copy of the ID card of the person accompanying you
  • a copy of the current account card of the person accompanying you.
 
In order to exercise the right to salary compensation for the person accompanying you while using paid leave, the employer of the person accompanying you should, in addition to the application, submit the following to the Ministry of Croatian Veterans:
 
  • certificate of paid leave for the person accompanying you showing the duration of paid leave and the amount of paid allowance for paid leave on the basis of a person accompanying a Croatian Homeland War veteran to use healthcare abroad
  • giro account number of the employer
 
The decision on exercising the right is adopted by the Minister of Croatian veterans based on the opinion of the based on the opinion of the Committee for approving the right to compensation for the difference in the price of treatment and medicinal products and the right to compensation for part of the costs for the person accompanying the beneficiary.
The Ministry pays the amount of compensation for transport costs for the person accompanying the beneficiary to the current account of the person accompanying the beneficiary, and the amount of compensation for the paid leave of the person accompanying the beneficiary is paid to the giro account of the employer.
