Franjo Bučar State Award for Sport

The State Award is given for years of success in sports, winning an Olympic medal, outstanding scientific, professional and pedagogical accomplishments or a sporting achievement

The Franjo Bučar State Award for Sport is the highest recognition that the Republic of Croatia gives for extraordinary achievements and contributions of special significance for the development of sports in the Republic of Croatia. It was established in 1991 as a successor of the May Physical Culture Award and the Republic Physical Culture Award, and is presented to professional and public workers in the area of sports, athletes, legal and natural persons performing sports activities, as well as other legal and natural persons who have contributed to the development of sports.

The State Award is given for years of success in sports, winning an Olympic medal, outstanding scientific, professional and pedagogical accomplishments or a sporting achievement, and the decision lies with the Committee of the Franjo Bučar State Award for Sport whose members are appointed by the Croatian Parliament at the suggestion of the State Secretary for Sport.

Competition

The notice of the competition for granting the Franjo Bučar State Award for Sport is published every year in mid-September in the daily newspaper for a period of 30 days from the day of publication. It establishes a procedure for the proposal of athletes and other individuals or groups, as well as natural and legal persons and other organisations performing sports activities (nominees) and the deadline for applying for incentives for the presentation of the award.

The application will be substantiated in writing, and may be submitted by:
  • sports associations
  • sports federations
  • unions of sports associations and federations
  • school and student sports clubs
  • schools, colleges and other legal persons performing sports activities, that are based in the Republic of Croatia
  • individuals and groups of prominent athletes and sports professionals
  • physical education teachers
  • coaches and other sports professionals
  • individuals, or citizens of the Republic of Croatia.

Within 15 days of the conclusion of the competition, the Ministry of Tourism and Sport submits the applications to the Committee for subsequent action and decision-making.

The Committee publishes the names of the winners and presents the State Award on 25 November marking the anniversary of the birth of Franjo Bučar, and all winners are presented with medals with the image of Franjo Bučar, special diplomas and financial rewards. The medals were designed by the academic sculptor Kosta Angeli Radovani.

The Franjo Bučar State Award for Sport is of national interest, and the funds necessary for presenting the State Award are made available from the state budget of the Republic of Croatia.
