Services covered by the CHIF

If you have mandatory health insurance, some forms of health care are fully covered by the CHIF

If you are registered for mandatory health insurance, some forms of health care are fully covered by the Croatian Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) even if you have not concluded a contract on supplementary health insurance.

Fully covered costs

The CHIF fully covers:
  • Comprehensive health care for children under the age of 18 and for insured persons’ children who are totally and permanently unable to live and work independently before they turn 18 in accordance with special regulations; that is, for the period of their full-time education, as well as for insured persons’ children who are totally and permanently unable to live and work independently after they turn 18 in accordance with special regulations, if they are dependent on the insured person, and for persons with permanent residence or approved permanent stay in Croatia, who are unable to live and work independently and have no resources to cover their subsistence, who acquire a health insurance status pursuant to a decision taken by the competent administrative authority of a county or the City of Zagreb which performs state administration activities pertaining to social welfare, if they cannot obtain health insurance otherwise,

  • Preventative and specific health care for children attending primary and secondary schools and university students,

  • Preventative health care for women,

  • Health care for women in relation to pregnancy tracking and childbirth, as well as health care related to assisted reproductive treatment in accordance with a special act,

  • Preventative health care for persons over the age of 65,

  • Preventative health care for persons with disabilities from the register of persons with disabilities established by a special regulation,

  • Comprehensive health care in relation to HIV infections and other communicable diseases for which the law stipulates implementation of measures to prevent their spreading,

  • Mandatory vaccination, seroprophylaxis and chemoprophylaxis,

  • Comprehensive treatment of chronic mental illnesses,

  • Comprehensive treatment of malignant diseases,

  • Comprehensive treatment as a consequence of a recognised occupational injury or illness,

  • Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis,

  • Health care in relation to removal and transplantation of human body parts for treatment purposes,

  • Outpatient emergency care as part of emergency health care, which includes emergency transport (by land, air and water),

  • Home visits and home treatment,

  • Home visiting nurses,

  • Non-emergency transport for special categories of patients,

  • Prescription medications from the CHIF's primary list of medications,

  • Health care in the insured person’s home,

  • Laboratory tests at the level of primary health care,

  • Palliative care.
