European Health Insurance Card

As a person insured with the CHIF, you are entitled to a European Health Insurance Card, which enables you to use health care services during your temporary stay in EU member states, Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Switzerland

Planned treatment in the EU/EEA/Switzerland

Treatment in the EU, EEA countries or Switzerland will be approved if provided for by the Croatian mandatory health insurance system and if you cannot receive this treatment in Croatia within a medically justifiable time limit

Referral for treatment abroad

The Directorate of the Croatian Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) decides on referrals for treatment abroad depending on the opinion of specialist doctors from contractual healthcare institutions

Health care services outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland

If you are travelling for private purposes to countries outside the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland, you are entitled to health care depending on whether a treaty on social insurance has been concluded with that particular country or not
