Warning signals

In Croatia, sirens, public address systems, electronic media and messages via mobile advices are used for public alerts

Sirens are used to warn the population of danger and are used to broadcast prescribed warning signals to alert the population to immediate or impending danger. An integral part of any warning signal is a public communication which provides timely and necessary information to act for effective protection. These communications are broadcast immediately after the signal, via available electronic sirens with the option of voice broadcasting, public address systems and electronic media.

Apart from warning signals for immediate and impending danger, there are also fire alert signals and signals for disappearance of danger. You can learn how to differentiate between various warning signals from the attached picture.

Sirens used for public alerts are checked on the first Saturday of every month at noon, when the system’s functionality is also checked by sounding the “disappearance of danger” signal. This is done to check the system’s functionality and also practice operating the system and check the efficiency of the protocols agreed with the electronic media.

In addition, the “Early Warning and Crisis Management System” (SRUUK) was implemented, which in Croatia, as in all EU Member States, has supplemented the current warning system with a public warning system via mobile devices with the aim of informing citizens in a timely manner about the emergence of a crisis situation and the possibility of sharing instructions for dealing in an endangered area via mobile phones and other modern technologies.

The inhabitants of a certain area of Croatia, as well as its visitors, will receive a warning message through their mobile devices about extraordinary events in the area, which are a potential danger to the lives and health of people, material goods or the environment. This means the occurrence of a disaster or major accident caused by a natural, technical-technological or human factor. (such as floods, fires, accidents involving dangerous substances, battery dam breaks, epidemics).

The message will contain a notification of the threats and measures to be taken as a matter of urgency, in order to minimise the negative consequences.

Warning messages will be received by all mobile phone users in the endangered area of the Republic of Croatia and foreign roaming users, as well as participants in the civil protection system of the affected area, which will enable faster response to the crisis and remediation of its consequences.
